8: McMaster – ‘Pretty Noose’

Patrick McMaster (Elder), Noreen McMaster (Elder),  Philip McMaster (Young Adult), Mark McMaster (Teen), Juliet McMaster (Teen), Catherine McMaster (Teen)

Philip McMaster was doing everything in his power to forget about how abruptly he’d been dumped by Gwendolyn Mosley.  The shock of it all had finally worn off, leaving only anger and sadness in its wake.  Philip still loved her, he wasn’t the type to just ‘turn something off’ the second it became difficult… but he wasn’t sure if he’d ever want to be with her again.  Especially not with the rumors that had been flying around lately.

They’d only been broken up for two months and already he was hearing about her running around with his step-cousin, Stefan Novak.  What the hell was up with that?

Noreen and Patrick were worried about their eldest, but they knew there was nothing they could do to help him.  Heartbreak was something you just kind of had to do on your own.  They tried to be supportive and comforting, but Philip just shrugged them off.  He threw himself into his work.  It was rare to even see him anymore.  He seemed only to appear for meals.

Despite everything, Philip hadn’t really lost his sense of worth.  He just wasn’t the type.  Their relationship had always been a bit strange and even strained at times.  They had few things in common other than their love of horses.

Philip was still Philip, even without Gwendolyn.  He would always be who he was.  He wasn’t about to change that just because one girl deemed him unworthy.  Instead, he’d just focus more on his goals and his horses.

Dolly was doing particularly well in the jumping circuit.  She was almost reading to do the International Cup!

Mark, meanwhile, did not have the same girl problems as his older brother.  He was actually quite popular with the ladies of his age, much to the shock of everyone else.  It was the fact that he just didn’t care.  Teenage girls flocked to it like he’d just started sparkling in the sunlight.  The fact that he ignored every single one them just added fuel to the fire.

Teenage girls were weird.  The only one he really bothered with was his best friend, Lily Ashton.  She’d recently gotten her driver’s license.  Mark was jealous.

“Stop pouting!”

“I’m not pouting,” Mark replied, pointedly making an effort to look out the window instead of at her.  “I”m just thinking.”

“Yeah, right.  You’re just mad because you’re being ferried around town by a girl!  Well, get over it, buddy.  Just be glad one of us can drive.”

“I can drive!” Mark snapped back.  “I just can’t do it legally.”

“Ha!  Sure.”  Lily pulled off to the side of the dirt road and brought the car to a jerky halt.  “Oops…”

“Yeah, you’re the best at this.  Try not to kill us, okay?”

“Shut up!”

The top of the falls had been Mark’s spot since he could remember.  It was where he went to get away.  Only Lily and Philip came to get him when he ran up here.  Lately, though, Lily had sort of adopted it as her place of solace, too.

“I would have my driver’s license, too, if my stupid brother hadn’t gotten dumped.  The entire family is trying so hard to make him happy.  It’s really annoying…”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad,” Lily said softly.  It was well-known that Mark had a bit of a chip on his shoulder and that all his exclamations were usually more dramatic than reality.  “They are just sort of worked up.  It’s kind of a big deal.  Wasn’t he going to propose?”

“I guess,” Mark replied with a shrug.  “But I don’t get why.  I mean, she was pretty, I guess… but I dunno.”

“Did you just admit that a girl was pretty?  Wow, maybe you are finally growing up!”  She leaned in, her eyebrows raised.  “Do you think I’m pretty?”

“Shut up, geeze…”

“It’s okay, you don’t have to say it.  I already know that you do.”

“You’re such a freak, Lily.”

“A pretty freak, though, right?”  She grinned and swayed her shoulders coyly.

Mark just shook his head.  “Here I am, trying to talk about how my family has forgotten I exist and you’re going on about your looks…”

“Oh, stop complaining.  You know I’d never forget about you.”

Philip was out trying to gather some rare seeds near the road between Aperture Valley and Aperture City when he heard a weird noise.  A woman was walking by the busy road, visibly distressed.  He abandoned his search and approached her.

“Are you okay?”  When she didn’t respond, he tried again.  “Excuse me, miss?”

She ran right into him before she noticed him.  Wiping her eyes, she looked up and nearly jumped back in fright.  “Stay away!  I will not let you get my valuables!”

Philip just stood there.  “Uuuh, what?  I was just asking if you were okay.”

“O-Oh… of course not.  I am sorry,” she said quickly.  Her accent was weird.  She certainly wasn’t a native.  “This… this idiot stole my car keys off a park bench!  I had only laid them there a moment!”

“Uh, yeah… you don’t really want to leave your things lying around in the city, especially not with certain people lurking around.”

“It is horrible!  I have been walking for an hour and I am still not home.  I wish I had never come here!”

“Er, you may want to calm down a bit.  You look a little exhausted and you don’t want to pass out.”

The woman took a deep breath and did her best to calm down.  She really did look as if she’d been walking a long time.  It was hard not to believe her story.  No woman that looked as she did would willingly get that sweaty.

“Look, what’s your name?  Maybe I can give you a ride home or something.  I’m Philip, Philip McMaster.”

“Oh, really?  My name is Bianca… I live in Aperture Valley with a few others.  But, before I return, I must get my car back or at least report that it is stolen!”

“It’s cool, my best friend is a cop… we can stop by.  It isn’t far.”

Philip hadn’t really intended to spend that much time with Bianca.  He was just trying to be nice.  Even so, after they visited the police station, they ended up hanging out.  They got along really well, despite the fact that Bianca was still a bit uncomfortable in Aperture.  Philip tried to help her acclimate with her surroundings better.  By the time either one realized how much time had passed, it was late in the evening.

He took her home and dropped her off, as he had promised.  There was no sign of her car, but Bianca didn’t seem to care as much about it anymore.  She seemed a bit enamored with Philip.

Patrick had been tasked by Clark to figure out who was responsible for the upswing in burglaries lately.  With the Steel family in its death throes, Clark wasn’t really keen on people operating without his consent.  Patrick had an inkling that it had to do with the Novak twins and was a little startled when his trail led him to Gwendolyn Mosley.

It was awkward, to say the least.  She’d dated Philip for years only to dump him.  Now she was hooking up with Stefan?  It was hard to keep professional.

Gwendolyn did not take kindly to Patrick’s accusations of her being ‘involved’ in the crimes.

“I’m not a criminal, Mr. McMaster!”  She snapped.  Gwendolyn always had a bit of a temper.  “And I’m not ‘shacking up’ with one, either!”

“All right, all right… calm down.  Just tell me where I can find Stefan.”

“It’s called a phone book!”  She huffed, stomping into her place of work.

Patrick shook his head.  The twins were unlisted.  He’d have to call in a favor with his sister, Kelly.

When Patrick did finally track down Stefan, he found that he wasn’t exactly open to talking.  He was smarter than Patrick had given him credit for.

“You’re joking, right?  I’m not telling you anything.”

“It’s really in your best interest, Stefan.  You’re getting involved in something that’s a lot bigger than you think…”

“Ha!  Sending some old man to shake me down?  Please.”

“Getting involved with the Steel family is dangerous, especially now.  I don’t give them much longer in this city…”

“I’m not working for or against anybody, I’m just out for myself.  If someone wants to try and claim my loyalty, good luck.  Let’s see what he’s got.  Until then, I do what I want, okay?”

Patrick shook his head.  “This isn’t going to end well… you’ve been warned.”

“We’ll see.”

Patrick had his hands so full with Clark’s pursuits that he couldn’t even begin to wrap his head around the fact that his own twins were now teenage girls.  Juliette loved school and enjoyed toying with computers.  Catherine had a bit of a hard edge, but she was really a softie on the inside.  Despite their differences, the twins were still as close as ever.

Catherine was a lot more involved with her family’s affairs than Juliette, who was glued to the computer screen.  This was not a good thing for Philip, who was just trying to eat his late-night pancakes in peace when Catherine said:

“So, are you going to see Bianca again?”

“W-what?!  Geeze, Cat!  Can’t you just be a normal kid and worry about school or something?”

“I was just asking.”

“It’s none of your business,” Philip replied quickly.  “Just let it go.”

Philip was defensive because he had been thinking about Bianca quite a bit.  He wasn’t really ready to endure another ‘crazy fest’, so he was quite happy to keep things friendly.  She was easy to talk to and fun to hang out with.  Her roommates were annoying, but nothing was ever perfect.  It was enough that she seemed completely content to hear him ramble on about mundane things and never seemed bored.  He’d never really had someone hanging on his every word before.  It was kind of nice.

First off, Patrick hunting down Stefan is related to this:

I love that it pointed to Gwendolyn and then Stefan!  How very fitting.  Gwendolyn autonomously snapped at Patrick.  He shook her hand, asked her for information, and then she flew into him.  She would do that to Philip, too.

Speaking of Philip, he met Bianca because of the ROS – Meet Someone New.  She was walking the long, winding road between the two areas, which I thought was strange, so I had him greet her.  She’s part of a wave of townies I made before vacation.  I don’t even remember her traits.  He greeted her and they got on really well.  They went from strangers to friends faster than any sims I’ve had in this game before!  They just kept interacting positively.  It was cute.

Which made me think, anytime I left Philip and Gwendolyn idle, they would do some romantic things and then argue.  They always argued.  It was usually prompted by Gwen.  They didn’t have a lot in common, so it was bound to happen, but Bianca hangs on Philip’s every word.  She’s quite enamored.  She calls him all the time now and whenever they are near one another, she has this above her head:

I had been holding out hope that somehow, Philip and Gwendolyn would come back together again, but now?  I don’t know.  I’m trying to let the sims decide… even if they make stupid decisions.  Sigh.  I’m pretty sure Bianca would try to jump Philip if I let her, but her autonomous woohoo is turned OFF!  His is not, however…

  • I missed this update somehow! I saw it in my Google Reader but I must have got distracted and thought I clicked to open it when I didn’t. Oops!

I have to try out this PI profession. It sounds so fun and I love how it’s fitting into your story so perfectly!

Hmmm, so Philip kind of has somewhat of a love triangle going on now. I really like Bianca and it seems like they’ve really clicked but I can see your dilemma with Gwendolyn too. It would be nice to see those two back together one day. Probably a good thing to let the Sims decide – takes the hard decision out of your hands!

I’m loving this thing between Mark and Lily too. What a flirt she is. Even if nothing ever develops, they’ve got a really good solid friendship there.

Haha, that’s okay! There was something screwy with this post when I published it and I think it may have messed up some feed readers.

The PI profession is fun, but hectic if you’ve got a full house to look after. Definitely more of a ‘small household’ type of job.

I am curious to see where this goes. I know Philip would probably be better off with Bianca, but there’s Gwendolyn to consider, too. Maybe she’ll snap to her senses and realize her mistake before going too far down the rabbit hole with Stefan. I doubt it, though. Sigh! I just wish TS3 sims were as clearly decisive as TS2 ones. Philip hasn’t rolled up ANY Gwendolyn-related wishes at all, though.

I love Mark and Lily. I am hoping Mark will eventually get the idea and things can go from friendly to more. ;)

  • Poor Philip….he could be a bit of a jerk sometimes, but I still feel bad for him and how quickly Gwen dumped him. Bianca seems like a promising prospect…

Your PI cases fit in so well with your storyline! It’s amazing! I love how Juliette and Catherine turned out! :)

    • Mao

Gwendolyn could have gone about it a different way, that’s for sure!

I’m constantly amazed by how in tune the PI cases are with my storyline! It’s really something else.

I am going to enjoy getting to know the twins better!

I like Bianca! She’s super pretty and Phillip deserves better. Is Gwen going to stay playable now that she’s hooking up with Stefan?

    • Mao

It’s just an assumption that’s she’s ‘hooking up’ with Stefan. Nothing has actually happened yet (aside from the kiss we saw in the other update)! We’ll see, though. She’ll probably remain playable unless there’s a reason for her not to be.

  • Oh my goodness! Question gwen! Love this career track it’s seriously perfect! She is sorta uppity isn’t she? I might like bianca better. And mark and lily! I seriously really like those two and her personality. She’s adorable as he k and mark is not allowed to ever hurt lily! Ever! She’s such a sweetheart to him. Loved their dialogue in this one.

    • Mao

Gwen is a bit of a basket case. I still don’t know what her deal is!

Awww, I’m glad you like Mark and Lily. I enjoy them, too. Their interactions are just too much sometimes. All this teetering on the edge of something more, but never quite going for it…
