14: Ashton – ‘She’s So High’

Lily Ashton (Young Adult), Mark McMaster (Young Adult)

Mark McMaster and Lily Ashton were finding that the act of actually getting married entailed a lot more work than either of them had realized. It had been a completely spontaneous thing, honestly. It was the right thing, but perhaps Mark could have gone about it in a better way and not in the wake of guilt brought on by his little affair.

Lily was clueless as to all of that, her brain far too occupied by all of the planning. She was in such a frenzy that she kept breaking everything. Mark teased her about it constantly. At least he was relatively handy.

Luckily, Lily had her soon to be sister-in-law, Bianca, to help. take the strain off a bit. Lucy was a big-wig doctor now and Lily hated taking her away from the few moments she actually got to spend with her family. Bianca was the perfect substitute. It helped that they were also pretty close, anyway

The day of, Lily thought she was going to die. She’d never been one for stage fright–she was fearless, flying into the fray with nary a thought or care for caution. This, however, was different. Was something going to go wrong? It had taken so long to get here and things were going so well, she just kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

“Are you sure?” Lily asked for the millionth time as they stood together beneath the archway. She’d asked about her dress so many times Mark was beginning to worry that his own neurotic tendencies had rubbed off on her.

“It’s fine, you look beautiful, so fussing,” he chided her gently, taking her hands. “Stop acting like a boulder is going to fall out of the sky and hit you. Everything’s gone amazingly so far. It’s going to be all right.”

She nodded at him. “You’re right, I’m sorry.”

The ceremony went on without a hitch, much to Lily’s relief. Mark had been right, of course, always the voice of calm reason. She was surprised he wasn’t more nervous. He wasn’t one for crowds or being the center of attention and yet, he seemed completely nonplussed by it all.

Mark held her after their chaste kiss and Lily smiled at him, a teasing gleam in her eyes. “Mark Ashton. That sounds more writerly, don’t you think?”

‘Too bad I used a pseudonym.”

“Are you sure you’re okay with this?”

“Absolutely. I don’t have the same attachment to ‘McMaster’ as the rest. It’s just a name.”

As the crowd dispersed, Mark released Lily and allowed her to rush off to the bathroom. Her nervousness had presented itself in unfortunate ways.

He wasn’t at all surprised to see his older brother and sister-in-law getting caught up in the romantic sway of it all. Their relationship was as solid as a rock, despite it all. Mark sighed. If he could keep the Rosalind thing under wraps, there’s a chance this might not all end in disaster.

Catherine had tried to dress in a way that made her pregnancy less obvious. She was still embarrassed. Lily did her best to reassure her. She was honestly a little jealous. Catherine was much younger and seemingly had the world ahead of her yet. Lily had spent a major part of her young adult life making stupid decisions and waiting around for Mark to pull his head out of his butt long enough to realize they could be a couple.

Rosalind showed up, of course. She was reaffirming that Mark’s ass was grass if he didn’t keep his end of the deal. Mark begged her off, telling her she needed to make herself scarce before Lily noticed.

“Aw, but I wanted to congratulate the bride.”

“Isn’t the entire point of this not to make a scene?”

“Fine,” she sniffed, eyes narrowed, “just don’t be late with the cash or this little fairytale you’ve created will become a nightmare.”

Mark was relieved when Rosalind left and Lily was none the wiser. They danced for awhile, Lily’s relief obvious on her face. She sighed and let him carry her weight for a moment.

“Nothing bad happened.”

“I told you,” he said softly. “Although, there’s still a chance of Juliet singing one of her bawdy shanties if she has another drink…”

“I think I can handle that.” Lily let out a small laugh.

“I’m really sorry we can’t go to France like you’d planned,” Lily said suddenly, glancing back at him. “But this composition is a pretty big deal…”

“It’s fine. I can write anywhere, anyway. That’s the beauty of being an author. Whenever you have time, we can go wherever.”

“Definitely. I’ve always wanted to leave Aperture, even if only for a little bit. I’m glad you’re not mad.”

Lucy had been dubious about Lily and Mark. It was her duty as Lily’s best friend since forever. She’d been happy when the wedding had gone off without a hitch, but couldn’t deny the nagging feeling she had in the back of her mind. Lucy had always been intensely intuitive, even more so since she lost her twin, Regan.

This time, however, she ignored it. Clearly her senses were off. Lily was happy and that was all that mattered.

Lily and Mark opted to stay the night at the wedding venue. It was a long drive back to the city and it was nice to have a night away from their respective professions. Everything had gone off without a hitch, much to Lily and Mark’s shared relief. While Lily’s anxiety was lessened, Mark’s remained. He still had a secret to keep.

Being married wasn’t really any different than before. They both went about their daily routines as usual. Lily was working double-time on a set of musical compositions intended for a feature film releasing next year. She was the lead, having several other, lesser-known musicians filling in on instruments she lacked skill in. It was her first big ‘group’ project and took a lot of her time.

Mark’s novels were selling like mad and he was momentarily enjoying the the satisfaction of being an up-and-coming author of some renown.

Gwendolyn Novak was one of the musicians Lily had in her group. Gwendolyn had a natural knack for most instruments, something Lily found herself slightly jealous of. Still, Lily’s mastery of lyrics and music in a bigger sense made her come out on top. Besides, Gwendolyn’s life was kind of a mess. Lily did not envy that. Not in the least.

They got to know one another fairly well during their time working together. Gwendolyn was unlike any married mother Lily had ever met. She went out and had fun, she was pretty youthful, despite being older than Lily. Better yet, she was a lot of fun. They went dancing at the club near the studio often and there were plenty of parties celebrating the movie’s intended release.

Lily’s lifestyle was adapting to the fast-paced one of music. She wasn’t a rock star or anything, but she was rubbing elbows with them in clubs and drinking to match their managers. It was all very dizzying and exciting. She sometimes lost sight of how old she was and the fact that she wasn’t some kid fresh out of college living it up in the city.

She was reminded of this fact when Mark would phone her. He wasn’t pushy or oppressive, more than happy to give her freedom, but responsible enough to remind her that she wasn’t twenty-two anymore.

Mark and Lily were opposites. Lily was out partying while Mark was home writing. On the nights where she was out, Mark often went to bed long before Lily came home, which was usually sometime after last call and around 3am.

It wasn’t that he was bothered by the fact that she was out late at clubs so much that he was concerned. He couldn’t say anything, though. Not with the secret he was carrying around. How could he lecture her when he’d done something much, much worse? No, better to just keep quiet, let it pass, and allow Lily to come to the realization that she wasn’t young enough to stay out all night on her own. She would. She was social, but she wasn’t an idiot.

Getting Mark’s attention wasn’t always easy. He’d spend hours holed up in his office, tirelessly working on his next novel. It was his quiet space, so Lily tried not to bother him. She only intruded when it was seriously important or when he’d all but given up on being a human being.

Feeling bad about being out so often was enough of a reason to intrude. She doubted he mind, given what she was wearing. It took him five minutes to turn around and face her, at which point whatever he was working on was quickly left until tomorrow.

“Good stopping point?” She asked with a smile.

“Good enough.”

It was nice to finally be at this comfortable point. Lily had thought it impossible at first. Mark had always been so withdrawn and unwilling to take that final leap. Poor Lily had no idea that Mark was a little more complicated than even she had anticipated…

These two, lol. They’re such opposites, but they’re so affectionate that it’s adorable. I’m still so mad about the ROS. Lily is going to find out. She has to. She’s Lily, you guys. This girl chased down her biological dad. She isn’t the type to just walk around in an ignorant fog. It’ll come up eventually. I am not looking forward to it. Damn it, Rosalind. You just had to get one final barb in on Lily, didn’t you? lol

My OTP ramblings aside… these two got the WooHoo Scavenger Hunt ROS. I did it in a way that whenever they did it, the selected option was theirs… so woohoo, risky woohoo, and TFB were all possible. I won’t torture you and will just say that I heard chimes RIGHT before I left this lot… they’d gone and done it on their own! Which is good, because they’ll be adults VERY soon. Unfortunately, because Lily’s not even showing or even pregnant past five sim minutes, we’ll have to wait until next round…

Gwendolyn and Lily autonomously became friends. Also, I never realized how much Lily looked like Cherie until I put her in her wedding dress. Wow. I still have no idea where she got her petite frame from, though. We all know Cherie had curves for days.

These two getting married is bittersweet. This entire relationship is now. DAMN YOU ROSALIND AND ROS. /fumes

  • “I did it in a way that whenever they did it, the selected option was theirs… so woohoo, risky woohoo, and TFB were all possible.”

Okay, I have to know. How did you do this? I’m assuming you didn’t just wait around and wait for them to do it, seeing it’d take forever to do a scavenger hunt that way. I’d kind of like to direct my sims to woohoo but leave the details to them, so I’m very curious!

But onto the update! There is such a sense of foreboding over this couple. I agree that Lily is going to find out. Not just because she’s Lily but also because of Rosalind being the way she is AND just because it’s a huge secret to keep and I don’t know if it can be kept under wraps forever. I’m so worried over what will happen when Mark and Rosalind’s dalliance comes to light!

I figured out that most sims, when their fun is low (and they have the ‘stressed’ moodlet), will woohoo (and randomize their choice based on traits/etc) when you press the moodlet. So, I just lower their fun motive, press the moodlet, and they run off and woohoo. I did this on community lots/etc too!

It’s not a perfect way to preserve autonomy… but most TS3 sims don’t woohoo often. I only have two couples that go at it like rabbits, the rest can go DAYS!

You’re right, too. Rosalind isn’t exactly the trustworthy type. Mark is the type to have a chip on his shoulder, so I can definitely see him carrying around the burden/secret forever… but Rosalind has been known to like to ‘stir things up.’ Also, Rosalind was mean to Lily in high school, so she’s got it out for her. They are technically half-sisters (they shared a father.)

I’m happy they’re married and expecting, but you know, you said… We’re always going to be waiting for the other shoe to drop and I’m ANGRY at Rosalind for showing up at the wedding, wtf?

Lily looked so pretty in her dress <3

    • Mao

Lily was gorgeous! I always forget how lovely she is… she’s pretty, but she always keeps it pretty understated, so it’s easy to miss.

Ugh. I am in agony over all of this!

  • The wedding was really pretty, and she makes a gorgeous bride. I didn’t realize she looked like Cherie until I went back to look, and you are right. Man I adored Cherie. I really dislike Rosalind… grr. And that stupid ROS. Just hate that they got together, now married, and with a baby on the way… and all this is just hovering over them, unbeknownst to poor Lily. I hope that she will be okay with it and not doing anything rash. Because we all know that it was ROS’ fault, not poor Mark’s!

If this puts it into perspective for you: Lily and Gwendolyn share a trait. Lily is more quiet and subdued about her ‘diva’ ways, whereas Gwendolyn lets them spill out all over the place. The quiet ones are always more dangerous. If Lily finds out, it’s gonna be bad. Because Lily is Lily–she’s fierce. She’s a fighter. And it’s Mark. Poor girl. I HATE THIS SO MUCH.

Y U DO THIS TO ME, ROS?! /cries

  • I’m so glad they married and are expecting a baby–but like everyone else, I dread the day Lily finds out about Mark’s indiscretion. :( I just hope their relationship can withstand that kind of pressure, and they will work it out–but I don’t know….that seems like something Mark would do, but I don’t know if I can see Lily putting up with it. Especially since she waited for him for so long–and since it was freaking Rosalind. Man.

    • Mao

Let us just think of it this way, the baby ties them together, so it can be too bad… right, right??? Oh man. I am dreading this as much as you guys are. YOU ARE SO RIGHT! Maybe it wasn’t Rosalind… but it was. Damn it, Rosalind. STOP STIFLING MY DREAMS!

  • You got me so worried with your comments on the last entry. Made me think everything came out already. Lily is so beautiful. I think she’s the prettiest adult you have. But she will be seriously possed when this happens. And I think it will take a long time for her to trust for a long time afterward. But for some reason, I think they could make it. It would have to be a very specific set of circumstances, but they could. It would have to be Mark who confesses though, and I don’t trust Rosalind to keep her mouth shut, even if she gets her money from Mark. She’s an evil little woman.

    • Mao

Lily really is lovely! :) I love that it’s not readily apparent; you sort of have to see her for awhile for it to sink in. It definitely suits her. I am freaking out about her finding out! It’s going to be scorched earth initially.

Never trust Rosalind–this should be a motto in Aperture Valley, lol!
